Western Caribbean Mexican cruises make the perfect vacations for everyone because in addition to all the activities on board the cruise ship, you can relax and explore at each port of call. November through early May are the best months to travel to this warm weather destination. Temperatures average 80 degrees Fahrenheit. The muggiest time of year is late May through June because it’s the start of the rainy season. July and August are the hottest, but a little less humid. Whatever month you choose to travel, be sure you take your excitement with you and get ready for fun!

The island of Cozumel, Mexico is included as a port of call for many Western Caribbean Mexican cruises. Once there, you’ll have to choose how to spend your time. There are excursions and tours to choose from, shopping, eating at one of the authentic Mexican restaurants, water sports, and more. Excursions and tours typically include your transportation. You can rent transportation on your own to do a little island exploration. If you decide to rent a car, and are not a resident of Mexico, you’ll want to buy the additional car insurance. The island is small with very few roads and their maps are easy to follow. With transportation, you won’t want to miss visiting some of the amazing, ancient Mayan ruins and one of the most gorgeous beaches you’ll ever see.

If you choose to visit the ruins, consider paying for one of the guided tours. “Self-guided” tours can be nice, but if you’re not an ancient Mayan ruin expert, you may be disappointed about not understanding the depth and cultural meaning behind these remarkable architectural artifacts and the people that built them.

Take all the time you need exploring the ruins, but be sure to leave enough time for a visit to the beach. You can stay near the port and go to the beach there, but if seclusion appeals to you, you’ll want to visit the beach areas on the other side of the island. The drive isn’t too long, but you’ll need transportation to get there. When you arrive, simply pull over on the side of the road, get out, walk two feet and you’re on a gorgeous, white sandy beach! The best part is how deserted and secluded it feels. The water is a beautiful, pristine turquoise-blue that looks almost like it’s been airbrushed onto the horizon. You do need to be careful since there is no lifeguard on duty. Even so, it’s just nice to lie on the beach and enjoy much needed rest and relaxation.

Last but not least, no vacation is complete without some serious shopping time! You can do that in the local shops near or on the port. If you love a bargain, once you leave the city limits while driving to the beach, watch for locals selling blankets, pottery and art in their yards. Typically the prices are much better than those in town and it’s always nice to stretch your vacation dollars.
