Giant Panda Cub Born at San Diego Zoo

On Wednesday, August 5, Bai Yun, one of the famed giant pandas at the San Diego Zoo, gave birth to her fifth cub. The hairless, pink, 4 ounce cub is being doted on by its proud mother, and will be examined by the zoo’s veterinary staff in about three weeks when Bai Yun will begin to regularly leave the den. In about a month the cub’s black and white markings will appear.

Following Chinese tradition, the new cub will not be given a name until it is 100 days old. Bai Yun and her cub will remain off exhibit in their den for four to five months as the cub grows, but you can view them live on the San Diego Zoo Panda Cam. If your San Diego vacation plans take you to the zoo before this time, you can still see Gao Gao, the new baby’s father, as well as the two other giant pandas, Su Lin and Zhen Zhen, on exhibit at the Giant Panda Research station.
