Many of you think of the
Disneyland® Resort when you think Get Away Today Vacations. You should since it’s one of our very favorite places on the planet, but we can also take you to

other exciting destinations and love giving helpful travel tips wherever you go. Today, we’re focusing on the amazing city of
New York, New York! As a former resident of the greater New York City area, I have a tremendous love for that city and area of the country.
If you’ve never been New York City, but have always wondered what it would be like to travel there, let me tell you a little bit about my experience. I lived in Yonkers, NY (just north of the Bronx and the Southern most city in Westchester County) as stay-at-home mom for several years while my husband commuted everyday to his office on Park Avenue in “the city.” I hardly expected to feel like a tourist on my last trip to New York, but I kind of did.
Last February, over the Presidents' Day weekend, I combined a family visit with my sister with a mini-vacation. I stayed in the home of my niece in Croton on Hudson. I’d never been there, but had heard about its charm and beauty. That was a correct assessment. The reason I point that out is because I want anyone planning a trip to NY to understand that if, for some reason, lodging in the city doesn’t work out for you, accommodations in the surrounding area are a viable option.
Whether you stay in Northern or Western NJ, Westchester County, NY, Long Island, or the southern cities of Connecticut, you can drive in and pay for parking, or my preference would be to use the commuter rail system, which is affordable, easy and convenient. It may take a little more pre-planning, but you do have alternatives. The main commuter rails are:
Metro-North- NY and CT
Port Authority (PATH) - NJ
Long Island Rail Road- Long Island

Going to NYC and not seeing a Broadway show is unimaginable to me, and unfortunately I only had time to see one, but which one? My sister, Claudia, had already seen Wicked and I had tickets to see it in April while on tour in Salt Lake City. She was going to Jersey Boys with her husband a few days after I left. We didn’t really want to see one of the many revivals, so we decided to go to Disney’s Mary Poppins. Despite the forecasted 60 mph winds, which became our reality, we had a great day in the city and enjoyed the show.
It was a delightful stage adaptation of the academy award winning movie. The production numbers are show stoppers with amazing special effects! For some, Mary Poppins made to the top of their favorite's list. Personally, I liked it, but it wasn’t a show I’d see again and again.
A short list of other musicals currently playing include: Wicked, Billy Elliot, Lion King, Jersey

Boys, Phantom, Mama Mia, West Side Story, South Pacific, Shrek the Musical, Hair, In the Heights, Chicago, Next to Normal, and Rock of Ages, to name a few. Go to www.broadway.com for more titles, pricing, and ticket availability.
Wrapping it up, our big day in the Big Apple was a sweeping success. Despite "wicked" gusts of wind, we were able to stay out of Kansas and in New York. It was a perfect day to go fly a kite.
