Now that summer is knocking on your door it's time to plan an exciting family vacation or weekend getaway. Parents, avoid whiny and bored kids! Take them to an old time family favorite, Balboa Park.

Located in sunny San Diego, this island peninsula offers an inexpensive ferry service for $1.00 for adults, .50 for children ages 5-11, and free under age five. It's a quick jaunt over to the island and crosses approx 800 feet of water. Balboa Park can also be reached by taking the bridge and driving around Newport Harbor.

What to do? In a nutshell, Balboa Park offers 14 museums to keep everyone in the family busy. Some of these favorites include The San Diego Museum of Art, San Diego Museum of Natural History, San Diego Museum of Air & Space, and San Diego Museum of Model Railroad. And of course no visit to Balboa Park is complete without exploring the World Famous San Diego Zoo! Balboa Park also includes botanical buildings, restaurants, golfing, and more. Access into the park is free, although some events do cost a fee.

For 30 years now, Balboa Park has been entertaining families with free music. Don't pass up Twilight in the Park, a free concert series that runs on June 15 through August 26, 2010. Concert goers can enjoy a wide array of musical genres such as, classic pop, Jazz, Latin, country, big band, and military. Are you an Elvis fan? Then mark your calendar for July 28, to attend “Graceland- An Elvis Presley Tribute!” All concerts run from 6:15-7:15 p.m.

Are you a movie fan? Then grab your sweetie, kids, and a blanket and head to Balboa's “Screen on the Green” on the east lawn for a free assortment of films. Held on select Fridays at 8 p.m., these kid-friendly movies are great for the entire family. Don't forget to bring the popcorn! Celebrating 22 years of dreamy music under the stars, the annual International Summer Organ Festival begins June 21, and takes place every Monday evening at the grand Sprockets Organ Pavilion. Shows begin at 7:30 p.m. and feature symphonies, orchestra soloists and local performers. Have you ever wanted to see a silent movie? Then don't miss this a unique experience under the stars on August 23, with Dennis James.

Another popular attraction is the 2010 Summer Shakespeare Festival. Although these plays are held on three different stages, Balboa Park is the backdrop for the Lowell Davies Festival Theatre. Be sure to bring an extra blanket or cushion for these evening performances. Look for these exciting productions to be preformed at the Lowell Davies Festival Theatre: King Lear, The Taming of the Shrew, and The Madness of George III. All shows begin June 12 and run through August 26, 2010.

Balboa's charming homes, unique gift and souvenir stores, along with tasty restaurants will reward your after a long day. You won't find any chain-stores here! Don't forget to visit Sea World and the Wild Animal Park to complete your family vacation.
