African Summer Festival at the San Diego Zoo's Wild Animal Park

Written by Darcy Beech

Now through September 16 you can celebrate the three adorable new additions to the San Diego Zoo’s Wild Animal Park elephant herd at the African Summer Festival. During this lively event you can grab a passport and map and start your journey through adventure stations designed to entertain, educate, and immerse you in the beauty and rhythm of Africa.

  • The beyond belief Acrobats of Tanzania perform to the beat of high energy drummers at Tembo Stadium.
  • Rain sticks, drums, and plenty of audience participation make for a rollicking good time during the interactive storytelling at Lagoon Overlook.
  • Chief Kahle, a man of sage understanding and a conflict resolution guru, is willing to help you settle disputes and offer words of wisdom at his post near Discovery Station.
  • Get a literal taste of Africa by sampling African banana bread with black walnuts, sweet potato pie, sambusas, African peanut stew, and specialty wines.
  • Drop by the African Meeting Place where artisans create beautiful beaded works and invite you to try your hand as well!
  • Robert, the friendly zebra who never met a guest he doesn’t love to chat with, is up to his crowd pleasing antics at Discovery Station.
And of course no day at the San Diego Zoo's Wild Animal Park is complete without paying a visit to the stars of the party at Elephant Rush! Each day at 11 a.m. guests can visit the elephant viewing patio to watch these delightful pachyderms find enrichment items and treats hidden in their enclosure. Be sure to bring your cameras to capture the cuteness! Also, be sure to hop aboard the Wild Animal Park’s Journey into Africa tour, which is included in your Get Away Today discounted tickets and is the best way to see all the Park has to offer.
