We’ve all heard the old adage, “It’s not the years in your life, but the life in your years that counts.” Well, now you can have both!
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics:
- Men who don’t take regular vacations are 32% more likely to die of
heart attacks, and 21% more likely to die early of all causes
- Women who don’t take regular vacations have a 50% greater risk of heart attack, and are twice as likely to be depressed as those who do.
- Some 75% of visits to primary care physicians come from stress-induced problems
Other interesting statistics:
- In a study conducted by researchers from the State University of New York in Orsweg on 12,338 middle aged men who were at risk of heart disease, it was found out that those who did not take regular vacations were more likely to die over a 9 year period than those who did.
- According to researcher Elaine Eaker, middle-aged women who do not usually take vacations have eight times the risk of either having a heart attack or dying of heart disease.
This means, as far as prolonging your life goes, a vacation is just what the doctor ordered! Not only do vacations melt away the fatigue, stress, and anxiety of the daily grind, the mere act of planning a vacation has been proven to increase levels of happiness. In a study conducted by Applied Research in Quality of Life, the anticipation of a vacation raised the spirits of travelers for eight straight weeks before their travels.
