Day 5: Anaheim, Carlsbad, La Jolla and San Diego

By Jordan Ulibarri 11/06/2015

We've been having the best time in Orange County, but all good things must come to an end. Luckily, we didn't have to go home quite yet. Instead we headed south to our second most popular vacation destination, San Diego. But, before we left, we checked out of the Ayres Hotel Orange, and headed over to the nearby Embassy Suites Orange.

The Embassy Suites Orange is such a great choice for families. This all-suite hotel serves a free hot breakfast each morning with a cook-to-order omelet station. We can attest to its deliciousness because we were treated to the same breakfast that all of the Embassy Suites Orange guests are served each morning. We also got to tour their sleek guest rooms and their common areas. They're one of the only area hotels that has both an indoor and outdoor swimming pool, and they are located right next to the Outlets at Orange.

After saying farewell to our Anaheim area hotels, we took the Amtrak train to Oceanside. Some of us planned on taking a nap on the way, but with views like this, no one wanted to miss a thing.

We got picked up from the station and our first stop in Carlsbad was the La Quinta Inn & Suites, a great choice for families on a budget. Their rooms are comfortable, and they serve a free continental breakfast each morning.

Next we headed over to the Homewood Suites Carlsbad, another great choice for families. This hotel is an all-suite property and each suite comes with a full kitchen. You may not need it though, because they serve a full hot breakfast each morning and a light dinner Monday - Thursday nights. It is such a great value! They also offer a complimentary shuttle service anywhere within five miles of the hotel - including LEGOLAND!

Our next visit was to the Carlsbad by the Sea Resort. We love this hotel's sprawling property and its awesome location. It is right by the Carlsbad Premium Outlets and tons of restaurants. It's also just a few minutes away from LEGOLAND and some of San Diego county's best beaches. Their guest rooms are huge, gorgeous, and have a mini fridge and microwave. The Carlsbad by the Sea Resort also serves a hot American breakfast buffet daily and offers free shuttle service to and from LEGOLAND.

Our next stop was a truly one-of-a-kind property, the Legoland Hotel, where everything is seriously awesome. It is meticulously themed and full of surprises. Guests get early access to LEGOLAND park during their stay, and a free hot breakfast every morning. It is a dream come true for any LEGO loving kid or kid at heart.

We then were treated to boxed lunches for a lovely picnic in LEGOLAND, where we then started exploring. We saw the new LEGO Friends Heartlake City, the Star Wars display in Miniland, and the actual set from the LEGO Movie. We also got to see the location where the all new LEGO Ninjago The Ride will open next spring. It will be an interactive adventure with technology never before used in a theme park. It's going to be just one more reason families love LEGOLAND! At Get Away Today, we offer the best deals at LEGOLAND on theme park tickets, including the Southern California City Pass which now includes a day at LEGOLAND!

After LEGOLAND, we toured the Sheraton Carlsbad Resort & Spa, which also offers a private entrance into LEGOLAND. This spa-like resort has one of the prettiest pool areas we've seen. Their rooms are huge and comfortable, and they're located near world-class golf courses.

Our final hotel tour in Carlsbad was The Cassara Carlsbad, Tapestry Collection by Hilton, one of our San Diego area favorites. It has a giant pool with a play area for kids, as well as a tranquil lap pool for adults only with views of the ocean and famous flower fields when in season. Their guest rooms are gorgeous and since the property only has 90 guestrooms, you'll feel like a VIP. And you'll really be a VIP when you book with Get Away Today because you'll get free parking, a $16 per night savings, and waived resort fees, a $25 per night savings!

Next we were on to La Jolla, famous for its beaches and golf. We were so enamored by the ocean that we had to stop and enjoy the view, before we toured the Sheraton Hotel La Jolla. This hotel is just minutes away from beaches, and is central for anyone wanting to explore the best of San Diego's attractions from Carlsbad to Mission Bay. Their pool is great, and like the Carlsbad Sheraton, their rooms offer every comfort.

We then headed to the Embassy Suites La Jolla for a tour and an amazing dinner from their in-house restaurant. They have everything you could want in a hotel; large suites  complete with a separate living room, microwave, and fridge, an indoor pool, sundeck with jacuzzi, free area shuttle, free hot breakfast buffet daily, and more. We could go on and on, but for the sake of time, we'll show you some pictures, and give you the chance to win a 2-night stay there.

Finally after a fun and sun-filled day, we checked-in to our rooms at the fabulous Dana on Mission Bay. This hotel is more like two hotels in one, and both sides of the resort are awesome. On one side of the resort you'll find gorgeous standard rooms and a lagoon pool with outdoor games. On the other side of the Dana you'll find huge bay view suites and an infinity pool overlooking the marina. You can't go wrong with either side, and no matter where you stay, you'll have a great experience and access to all of the amenities at the Dana on Mission Bay. Here's a morning shot from our bay view suite, just to give you an idea of how gorgeous it really is.

It goes without saying, we LOVE San Diego! We'll keep you updated with the next couple of days as we wind down on our week of fun in Southern California. In the meantime, use promo code: FAM2015 to save an extra $20 on any 2-night or longer Southern California vacation booked online.
