Alpine School District Foundation

Get Away Today has a long history of supporting education. The company’s very own co-founder, Chuck Smith, wrote a children’s book and spent years visiting schools and reading to children. To expand on their efforts in local schools, Get Away Today is proud to sponsor programs such as the Alpine School District Foundation, which enhances education opportunities for students in the Alpine School District. Each year Get Away Today is privileged to attend the Accent on Excellence Awards as a sponsor and see first-hand how the Alpine School District Foundation is following through on their mission to enrich education.

The Alpine School District Foundation is a charitable organization established in 1984. Over the past 35 years, its aim has been to provide resources for education and experiences for students in need. All cash and in-kind donations are tax deductible and are funneled directly to the students. Below you can learn more about how the Alpine School District Foundation is enriching the lives of children:

STARS Summer Reading Program - Established 17 years ago, the STARS (Students and Teachers Achieving Reading Success) Summer Reading Program focuses on the reading skills of Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade children. Over one million dollars has been contributed to this program thanks to generous donations.

Scholarships - There are 11 high schools in the Alpine School District, and the Alpine School District Foundation provides a $1,000 scholarship to a graduating senior from each one. It’s the Foundation’s mission to recruit private donors and local businesses to match their donation amount so each scholarship recipient can face their next adventure with support.

Gym Shoes for Needy Students - Over a 14-year time span, this program has been able to provide nearly 500 pairs of gym shoes to students who would otherwise go without.

Summer Initiative to Motivate Students (SIMS) - To complement the STARS reading program, SIMS aims to encourage students entering the 7th grade as they tackle reading and math. SIMS also strives to increase students’ confidence and build their study skills for lifelong learning.

In addition to giving back to the students in the Alpine School District, the Alpine School District Foundation recognizes educators who have gone above and beyond for their students. The Accent on Excellence Awards is a 22-year tradition that offers $500 and in-kind gifts to a number of educators, employees and administrators each year. Get Away Today is proud to support the Alpine School District Foundation as it fulfills its mission to provide many opportunities to students and educators. Get Away Today is an Alpine School District Foundation sponsor as well as a participant in the “Swing for the STARS” golf tournament. The annual tournament is hosted to raise money for the STARS reading program and, given Chuck’s personal commitment to literacy, Get Away Today won't say no to helping children learn to read. As a “Swing for the STARS” sponsor, Get Away Today can help at least three students participate in the STARS Summer Reading Program, ensuring each gets the individual attention needed to improve their reading skills for the upcoming school year.
