Take a moment to imagine yourself as a student boarding the Hogwarts Express. Feel your excitement as the train whistle sounds. The track rumbles as the steam engine pulls the cars into motion and Platform 9 3/4 quickly whisks away into the background. Friends are reunited and there are plenty of hugs, high fives and back slaps to go around. When things begin to settle, your belly starts to growl.

As if on cue, the Honeydukes Express food trolley rolls down the aisle. Gooey Chocolate Frogs, rich Cauldron Cakes, and colorful Licorice Wands tempt you with their magical sweetness. But, before you make your selection, a rich and buttery aroma fills the air. Someone exclaims with delight, "The Pumpkin Pasties are out of the oven!"  They smell too good to resist. Your first bite confirms that there must be something magical about them. The pastry crust is light and flakey and the pumpkin filling is gently swirled with sweet butterscotch--a perfect mixture of savory and sweet. It is the best thing you have ever tasted. The food cart moves to the next passenger car and all that is left of your pumpkin pasty are a few crumbs scattered on your robes. It is a bewitching beginning to an adventurous year at Hogwarts!

Harry Potter Pumpkin Pasties Recipe

  • 1 Cup Pumpkin Puree

  • 1/4 Cup Sugar
  • 1/2 Tsp Pumpkin Pie Spice
  • 2 Eggs
  • Butterscotch Baking Chips
  • 1/4 Cup Butter
  • 1 Package Pre-made Refrigerated Pastry/Pie Crust

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.

Combine the pumpkin puree, sugar, pumpkin pie spice and eggs in a bowl. Stir them together until they are combined. Set aside.

Spread the pie crust onto a cutting board. Use a large canning jar lid, or a circle cookie cutter to cut the dough into circles. I was able to get eight circles out of each of the pre-made pie crusts. There are some left over scraps of dough. You can combine the scraps, roll out the dough, and get a few more circles out of it if you would like!

Build each individual pastry in layers. Spread melted butter along the top of the dough. Then, scoop a teaspoon of the pumpkin filling onto the center of the circle. Add a few butterscotch chips. The butterscotch chips are the secret ingredient to this recipe. After reading reviews and studying various recipes about the Pumpkin Pasties at Universal Studios, I decided they needed an extra "Hogwarts element." Many people suggested eating the pasties with a drink of Butterbeer. So, I decided to put a little bit of that butterbeer flavor into the treat instead! I started with using four chips in each pasty but, after I sampled the first batch, I decided that the butterscotch flavor was so yummy, I added about six butterscotch chips to each pasty in my second batch. I'd recommend using six or seven, if you are feeling adventurous.

I think the butterscotch is the perfect addition to the Harry Potter pumpkin pasties recipe. I hope you agree. Once the filling is complete, fold the dough in half. It will be a half moon shape. Press down and seal the open edges together with your fingers and then press a fork along the sealed edge to make a crinkle design.

Make a slit in the dough with a sharp knife point to allow steam to release when baking. Since this is a Harry Potter pumpkin pasties recipe, I decided an appropriate scar would be a lightening bolt. Don't you agree?

Brush the tops of your pumpkin pasties with butter. Don't skip the butter! It makes the dough rich and flakey and allows it to brown nicely while cooking. Place the finished pumpkin pasties on a greased baking sheet. Allow them to bake for about 15 minutes in a 400 degree oven. You will know they are ready when the tops are golden brown.

This Harry Potter pumpkin pasties recipe is best when served warm. They only need a few minutes to cool after they are out of the oven. I hope you enjoy them as much as I did. I had no idea pumpkin could ever be so delicious. It is quite magical.

Anonymous- Thanks for the feedback! We're so glad you had success with this recipe.

I got 9 circles out of each crust. Filling made enough for 3 packages of pie crust (6 crusts). 1 teaspoon of filling is plenty. 2nd time making them - definitely a hit with Harry Potter fans.

Nancy- So happy to hear you tried these! I totally want to have a Harry Potter party as a grown up!! Thanks for the tip regarding the cinnamon and the egg. I'll have to try that when I make these.

Hi, just finished making 4 batches of these for my daughters 30th Harry Potter themed birthday. I actually added cinnamon to mine and used one less egg. When I did I dry run I thought the extra egg made it too runny. They’re delicious though!

Lyssa- So glad to hear you've loved this recipe! Melting the butterscotch chips into the pumpkin sounds like such a tasty way of making the pumpkin pasties!

I’ve made these 3 times now and they are great! I ended up actually just melting a bunch of the butterscotch chips and mixing them in with the pumpkin this time. We’ll see how it’s goes!

Love it!

Hi!

These look amazing! How many did you get out of one batch? I need to make 40 so I was curious how many you got!
