Disneyland Corn Dog

The food at the Disney Parks is not only delicious, but nostalgic as well. The smell of cinnamon churros makes me want to relax at the Cozy Cone Motel in Cars Land with the sound of Mater singing in the background. Fresh buttery popcorn reminds me of the happy feeling I get watching Disney characters dance down Main Street U.S.A. during a parade. The sweet taste of a Dole Whip puts a smile on my face as I think about the ridiculous jokes on the Jungle Cruise adventure. What is your favorite Disney treat? What happy Disney memories does it bring to your mind?

Last fall, my family and I had a chance to visit Disneyland for a fun vacation. One afternoon at Disney California Adventure Park, we happened upon one of our new favorite foods; the Disneyland corn dog!

My little boy was too short to ride on the Goofy's Flight School attraction, so he and I had a few minutes to spare while the rest of our group went on the crazy dizzy rollercoaster. We could smell something fried and delicious being made at the restaurant next to the ride, so we headed over to check it out.

The Corndog Castle was making hand dipped freshly fried corn dogs. We had heard good things about the Disneyland corn dogs and decided to check them out! It was a very good decision. It was so tasty! What is it about carnival food that makes it so satisfying?

Disneyland Corn Dog Yum

I decided to try making hand-dipped corn dogs at home to see if we could replicate the delicious Disneyland Corn Dog Recipe that we experienced on our vacation. There are a lot of recipes online that I sorted through and analyzed. This recipe is a happy compilation of the best recipes I could find. I hope you love it and that the taste brings you back to a magical moment on Paradise Pier.

Disneyland Corn Dog Food

Copycat Disneyland Corn Dog Recipe

3/4 cup corn meal
3/4 cup flour
1 T sugar
1/3 tsp salt
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
1 egg
1 T oil
2 T honey
3/4 cup buttermilk
8 hotdogs
oil for frying (about 2 cups)

Place the dry ingredients in a bowl. Mix them until they are fully combined.

In a separate container add the egg, oil and honey. Stir it together so the egg is beaten.

Disneyland Corn Dog Honey

Pour the egg mixture into the dry ingredients bowl. Add the buttermilk and stir it all together. Do not over mix it. You just want all the dry ingredients mixed in with the wet.

Disneyland Corn Dog Buttermilk

The batter will be pretty thick. Then, set the batter aside for a few minutes. It will continue to set up while you get the oil and hot dogs ready.

Disneyland Corn Dog Batter

Place a frying pan on your stove and get it warm at medium heat. Pour in about 2 cups of oil. This measurement will depend on the size of your pan. The oil should be about an inch deep.

You can test if your oil is ready for frying by placing a small scoop of batter into the oil. If it floats to the top and starts to bubble, the oil is hot enough for frying. If it starts smoking and cooking the batter really fast, then turn the burner down a little. If the batter sinks and doesn't bubble at all, wait a few minutes longer and try the test again.

Poke the sticks into the ends of the hot dogs. I used caramel apple sticks because they are more sturdy than barbecue skewer sticks. They were also a great legnth. Push the stick to be about 3/4 the way up the hotdog center.

The quality of the hot dog is really important to the finished taste of a copycat Disneyland corn dog. I recommend buying the all beef premium quality dogs.

Place a few scoops of the copycat Disneyland corn dog batter in a tall glass. Dip the hot dog into the glass and roll it around as you pull it out of the batter. The batter should stick to the hot dog. It takes a little bit of practice!

Disneyland Corn Dog Dip

Place it into the oil to fry.

Disneyland Corn Dog Oil

I just want to quickly show you a picture of the first two corn dogs that I cooked. This is what yours will look like if you make the layer of batter on the hot dog too thick. They get all flat and crazy. It really only takes a thin layer of batter to cook up nicely. The good news is that these corn dogs were still tasty. They were just not very pretty.

Disneyland Corn Dog Too Much

Let your copycat Disneyland corn dog cook for about one minute and then rotate it about 1/3 of the way around. Wait a minute and then rotate it again. Continue rotating until the corn dog is a dark golden brown. Rotate the dog using tongs on the stick.

Disneyland Corn Dog Fry

Take the corn dog out of the oil and let it cool resting on a paper towel or napkin. Repeat the cooking process until all of the corn dogs are fried and ready.

Disneyland Corn Dog Eat

Cut the dogs into quarters for mini corn dogs and the batter was thick but definitely still dippable. HOT DOG we have a Wiener

Other reader obviously did something wrong. This recipe is AMAZING!! My family all agreed they were the best corn dogs they had ever had and we even used vegan wieners

My Grand Daughter wanted corn dogs for dinner but we live on a farm 30 miles to the nearest WALMART and I told her i would make her some. I’ve tried other recipes and they all have been lacking. I tried this recipe and when she took her first bit she started yelling “this is soooo good please don’t buy store bought anymore!” So it looks like I will be the Grandma that makes home made corn dogs from now on. LOL. Thank you for sharing this recipe you made a little girl very happy.

I love this recipe. It turned out great! Just like being at Disneyland!

These were awesome! Anonymous above did something wrong. Great recipe. I had a little batter left so I coated some onions too. Oh my gosh??????

Anonymous- So glad to hear the recipe worked well for you! It's so fun to have a taste of Disney at home.

I don’t know what the other person is talking about. Just made these and they turned out great.

Anonymous- So sorry to hear the recipe didn't work out for you! Maybe next time more buttermilk will help the batter be more moist and ready for dipping?

Horrible, thanks for ruining dinner. The “batter” was a pile of crumbs and certainly not dippable. Followed it exactly unfortunately.
