Disneyland Temporary Closure 2020
September 25, 2020
Author: Kimberly Fidler

UPDATED September 25, 2020: Disney is actively making progress towards the worldwide closures and reopenings of their theme parks. The theme parks of the Disneyland Resort have been closed since March 14, 2020 due to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis. Find the latest answers to all of your Disneyland reopening questions below, including official answers from Disney.

Disneyland Closure

Disneyland Temporary Closure 2020

While this is still a developing story, we have provided the answers we know for the most commonly asked questions regarding Disney closures. Para información en español, haga clic aquí

When will Disneyland reopen?

The Disneyland Resort proposed an opening plan for the following dates:

Downtown Disney District: July 9, 2020 (Approved)

Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park: There is currently no reopening date for the theme parks of the Disneyland Resort. The Disneyland Resort has been meeting with local and state government and working towards approval for reopening. The state of California recently released new guidelines for businesses to reopen. Although theme parks were not included in these guidelines, they have said that they are actively moving forward with guidelines for California theme parks.

On September 16, 2020, Governor Newsom said that they will release theme park guidelines "very, very soon," although nothing new has been released to date. This past week the Disneyland Resort, as well as local government and business leaders, and other Southern California theme parks, have urged the Governor to release guidelines. They are anxious to reopen and have been working tirelessly to ensure that Guests and Cast Members can return to the theme parks safely.

Disney's Paradise Pier Hotel, Disneyland Hotel and Disney's Grand Californian Hotel & Spa: There is no reopening date scheduled for the Hotels of the Disneyland Resort. At this time, all hotel reservations for travel through October 10, 2020 have been cancelled. Guests are given the open to reschedule. Although no dates have been announced and booking dates have changed, right now Disneyland is accepting new reservations for Disney's Paradise Pier Hotel and Disney's Grand Californian Hotel & Spa for check-in beginning October 16, 2020.

May 20, 2020: The Disneyland Resort announced the extension of travel dates for two promotional tickets. Both the Southern California Resident ticket and the Spring Child ticket are now valid for travel through December 16, 2021. If you have either of these tickets, please find the section below on all of the details on how this will affect your tickets.

As of right now, the Disneyland Resort's originally proposed reopening date of July 17, 2020 has been delayed until further notice. We expect to hear an approved opening date in the near future, pending state and local government approval. We are hopeful that it's a short delay and will let you know as soon as an official opening date is announced. As always, it's important to note that we will only post official information that comes directly through Disney to ensure that you are receiving accurate information. This page will be updated frequently as more information becomes available.

As California has rolled out their phased plans for reopening, one main question has been what phase theme parks would be considered. As of May 26, 2020, California has confirmed that theme parks will be considered Phase 3 of reopening.  However, as of early September, the state has moved to a new color coded tracking system that monitors both new Covid-19 cases and positive test rates by county. This system is intended to make business reopenings more clear, and move more smoothly and steadily. Purple, aka Tier 1, is the most restrictive color in the tracking system. As of September 10, 2020, Orange County where the Disneyland Resort is located, is in Red, or Tier 2. Orange County expects to move to Orange, or Tier 3 on Tuesday, September 29, 2020 when numbers are released.

Additionally, Disney released an article from the Disney Parks Chief Medical Officer regarding plans and procedures in order to reopen. We highly encourage you to read it and are so grateful that Disney has such a commitment to keeping their Cast Members and guests safe and healthy.

Top Questions about Disneyland Reopening

Since Walt Disney World's successful opening, we have gotten a lot of questions about how this affects the Disneyland Resort. So we wanted to let you know what we know – and keep in mind we will ONLY share official messages from Disney. We don’t report on rumors – and there are a lot out there. We also want you to keep in mind: Walt Disney World is much bigger, has four different Parks and has different government guidelines, so there will obviously be some differences. But, watching Walt Disney World go so smoothly certainly gives us hope! Now, onto our top questions:

Will I need a date-specific ticket to get into Disneyland?

As of right now, Disneyland has confirmed that there will be a date-specific reservations system. The Disneyland Resort has temporarily stopped selling tickets, but we'll be sure to let you know as soon as we're able to sell Disneyland Resort tickets again.

Will I need a reservation to go to Disneyland?

Disney has confirmed that there will be a reservation system for the Disneyland Resort in California. As soon as information about these reservation systems is announced, we will be sure to let our guests know about it ASAP.

How do I buy tickets for Disneyland when it reopens?

Disneyland tickets are temporarily unavailable while the Disneyland Resort is closed. We anticipate that tickets will not be available to purchase again until those guests who have tickets are able to make their theme park reservations. If the Disneyland Resort follows Walt Disney World’s lead, tickets may not be available for new purchases until after the theme parks open. We will of course update this article as soon as we know when Disneyland tickets are back.

Will Disneyland sell out when it reopens?

The Disneyland Resort always has capacity limits, and they have not announced what new capacity limits will be when the parks reopen. However, it is possible that reservations may sell out for certain dates with reduced capacity and a reservations system in place. We will share as soon as Disney has released information.

Why is the Disneyland Resort closed?

Although there have not been any reported cases of COVID-19 (commonly referred to as "coronavirus") at the Disneyland Resort, they have taken preventive measures under the guidance of the Governor of California and CDC.

When will the Disneyland Resort be closed?

Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park were both closed beginning on Saturday, March 14, 2020 and will continue to be closed until further notice. Disney is working closely with both health and government officials to monitor the situation. We will be sure to update you as soon as we have more information.

The Hotels of the Disneyland Resort followed suit and closed on March 16, 2020. However, Downtown Disney successfully reopened on July 9, 2020. Disney's Paradise Pier, Disneyland Hotel and Disney's Grand Californian Hotel & Spa will open at a later date.

What if I have a Disneyland vacation booked during the emergency closure?

If you currently have a Disneyland vacation booked from now until October 10, 2020, we encourage you to reschedule for a later date. We are waiving all rescheduling fees. You can call our agents at 855-GET-AWAY or send us a direct message on Facebook. We are responding to messages and helping people reschedule as quickly as possible.

Another option many guests have been taking advantage of is exchanging their Disneyland vacation for a Walt Disney World vacation. In most cases, Get Away Today guests who have had Disneyland vacations scheduled throughout 2020 have been able to apply the full amount of their Disneyland vacation towards a Walt Disney World vacation. If you’re interested in this, the quickest way to get a quote and make the change is to call our agents at 855-GET-AWAY.

If you feel as though you need to completely cancel your reservation, you may do so without any fees if you purchased our Peace of Mind Plan. If you did not purchase Peace of Mind, you may cancel vacation packages for just $150 and ticket only orders for just $50. And remember, you can reschedule your entire vacation in full with NO fees at all.

We are also keeping our COVID-19 Travel Update page current with the latest travel information.

I was on vacation at the Disneyland Resort during the announced closure, now what?

Disneyland announced that guests who were not able to use the entirety of their ticket due to the park closure are valid through the end of their respective validity period. If you purchased your Disneyland tickets on or after Feb. 21, 2020, you will have until December 31, 2021 to use the remainder of your tickets.

If you are unable to use the remainder of your partially used tickets, you may request a refund by mailing your partially used tickets with a request for refund letter. Your letter should include the following information:

  • 1. Payable Name (i.e. name of person who purchased tickets)
  • 2. Physical Address (this address is where the refund check will be mailed to, if approved)
  • 3. Contact Phone Number
  • 4. Physical Tickets (we recommend that you take a picture of the front and back of the actual ticket(s) for your records)

Mail all of this information above to the following address:

What if I have a Disneyland vacation booked for October or later this year?

If you are currently booked for travel through October 10, 2020, we will contact you directly to go over different options for your vacation package. If you choose to cancel, the regular cancellation fees of $150 for packages and $50 for ticket only orders will apply unless you have the Peace of Mind Plan.

What if I have a Disneyland vacation scheduled for this fall?

At this point, we are recommending that you hold onto your Disneyland vacation reservations. With the rate that things are changing, the longer you can hold off on any reschedules or cancellations, the better. Best case scenario, you may be able to go and enjoy your vacation. If the Disneyland Resort remains closed during your travel dates, you will have the most flexible rebooking options by keeping your reservation. If you cancel before a park closure is announced, you could be forfeiting comeback offers and lose flexibility.

Will the Disney closure affect my Kids Spring special tickets?

Previously, the Kids Spring ticket special was valid for use through May 21, 2020. However, due to the recent Disneyland Resort closures, the Kids Spring special has now been extended for travel through December 16, 2021. Please note that the entirety of your ticket needs to be used by December 16, 2021. This ticket will expire and will no longer be valid after this date. If you have not used any of the days of your Kids Spring Special ticket, all days still must be used within 13 days of the first day of use, and no later than December 16, 2021. If you choose to cancel those tickets, any cancellations must be made by July 31, 2020, otherwise, your tickets will become non-refundable. If your tickets become non-refundable, they do not lose their value and may be applied to another ticket for travel at a later date. You'll hold on to your tickets and may upgrade them at the ticket gate at the Disneyland Resort. Regular cancellation policies will apply. Blockout dates of December 19, 2020 - January 4, 2021, March 26 - April 11, 2021; July 4, 2021; November 20-27, 2021 apply.

We have sent communications to all of our guests who have this ticket type regarding their specific situation. If you have purchased this ticket with us and have not heard from us, please feel to contact us directly at 855-GET-AWAY or our social media channels.

How will the Disney closure affect my Southern California Resident discount tickets?

Previously, guests who purchased this ticket offer had until May 21, 2020 to use this special. However, as of May 20, 2020, the expiration date will be extended through December 16, 2021. Please note that this ticket must be used in its entirety on the new expiration date. Blockout dates of November 21-28, 2020; December 19, 2020 - January 10, 2021; March 26-April 11; July 4; November 20-27, 2021 apply. A Southern California Photo ID is still required to use this ticket and must be presented at the park for admission.

How does the closure impact my Disneyland Resort annual pass?

Disneyland announced that once the Park reopens, the expiration of your annual pass will be extended by the amount of time that the Parks were closed. Additionally, if you're on a monthly payment plan, you will continue to make payments. However, you won't make extra payments once your current expiration date is hit. For more information regarding annual passes, please visit Disneyland's official website

When should I rebook my Disneyland vacation?

We recommend booking as soon as you know your dates. While this emergency closure is unprecedented, there is so much to be excited about coming to the Disneyland Resort. Here is a quick at-a-glance of things to look forward to:

  • Rise of the Resistance at Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge
  • Kids Spring Savings and SoCal Resident Offer - Dates extended for travel. See paragraph above for more information.
  • Halloween Time at the Disneyland Resort (mid-September-October 31st)
  • Holidays at the Disneyland Resort (mid-November-early January 2021)

Do I have to know my travel dates to reschedule?

Nope! We can leave your total travel credit in your account and can reschedule once you have some time to check your schedule. You'll just select your account credit as your form of payment when you rebook your vacation.

How far out can I reschedule my Disneyland vacation?

Right now we will allow you to reschedule with no fees into 2021. We can help you reschedule your Disneyland vacation right away. Or, if you're not sure of your travel dates, you can keep your entire travel credit from your 2020 vacation in your file until you're ready to book.

Will Disneyland be different when it reopens?

While the Disneyland Resort will still be home to beloved attractions and entertainment, they are committed to protecting their Cast Members and Guests. On May 5, 2020, a statement was released from Disney Parks Chief Medical Offer, Dr. Pamela Hymel. While no specific details were released, this statement highlighted some of the safety measures Disney is currently exploring for a reopening plan including:

  • Phased reopening
  • Physical distancing
  • Capacity measures
  • Cleanliness and sanitation
  • Screening and prevention support
  • Cast Member training

Once again, we are so grateful to Disney in their dedication to their Guests and Cast Members. We encourage you to read the entire message from the Disney Parks Chief Medical Officer here. We will update this page with more specifics as they become available.

Will the hotels be making changes?

Yes - our hotel partners know how important it is for you to be protected while you're traveling. Hotels around the world are increasing cleaning and health policies and procedures. Many of these procedures include increased frequency of cleaning high traffic public areas and high touch surfaces in guest rooms. Hospital-grade disinfectants are becoming the norm in hotel sanitation. While each hotel may have slightly different procedures, know that they are keeping your health and well being at the forefront of everything they do. You can see what additional procedures are being implemented by each property individually on each hotel's detail page on our site. Just click your desired room type and you'll see all of the hotel's detailed information, including additional Covid-19 procedures.

Hi Anonymous, Great question. Without an opening date, Disney has not made an announcement or extended tickets yet, BUT we will be in contact with all ticket holders as soon as we get an update.

Is there any update on tickets purchased before 2/8/2020? Will these be extended beyond 2020?

Anonymous- Good question! Will you please contact us at 855-GET-AWAY regarding your vacation? You can also message our customer service team on Facebook if that's more convenient. Thank you!

If my hotel is closed during my time of travel will i still get charged the $150 dollars per room cancellation if I choose not to reschedule

Anonymous- Thank you for reaching out! If you can, please call our customer service team at 855-GET-AWAY for help with your vacation. Or, you can contact a team member via Facebook messages. Hope this helps!

I tried to get a hold of you last month by email and did not get a response. I was wondering if there was a way to cancel our flights to get cheaper ones?

Anonymous- Hello! For questions about San Diego hotels, will you please give us a call at 855-GET-AWAY, or reach out to us on Facebook direct messages? Our customer service team is happy to help!

Are there any san diego hotels with availability. Everything on web site shows unavailable.

Anonymous- Please contact us regarding your Hawaii trip. Give us a call at 855-GET-AWAY or send an email to [email protected] Thanks so much!

We booked a trip to Hawaii the first June. The island is requiring self quarantine for 14 days right now. It may change by June, but doubtful. Can we push our vacation out until 2021. We didn’t get insurance, because we didn’t think that a Pandemic would be taking over our plans. What can you do for us?

Mary- If you still have questions about your vacation and your other family members, please give us a call at 855-GET-AWAY, or send an email to [email protected], or send a direct message on Facebook. One of our customer service team members is happy to help! Thanks!

Bell - Good news! Disney recently announced they're pausing payments for Annual Passholders. Looks like you had the right idea ;)

I received notification that my hotel is cancelled for June 6 - 10. I also paid for ART while we are there. Other family members that booked a day prior to me have not received notification. I am wondering if my notification was an error since your announcement is for vacation packages through April 18.

Instead of continuing to charge annual pass holders during this unprecedented time, why doesn’t Disneyland put a “hold” on monthly charge and resume and extend AP and payment once Disneyland reopens? I could use that money during these times of unemployment. I’m cutting corners in my expenses, Why isn’t Disneyland?

Darren- Thank you for reaching out on our blog! Our customer service team is happy to help you with your vacation. Please give them a call at 855-GET-AWAY, or send an email to [email protected], or send a direct message on Facebook. Hope this helps!

Debby - Hello! Please contact our customer service team at 855-GET-AWAY, or send an email to [email protected], or send a direct message on Facebook. Those are the best ways to get your vacation rescheduled. Thank you!

I’m trying to cancel my booking since Disneyland is now close indefinitely. But now I’m being charged $150 instead of $75 why? I have a screen shot of this.

Anonymous- Hi! If you haven't already, will you please contact us so we can help you with your vacation? Feel free to call 855-GET-AWAY, email us at [email protected], or send us a direct message on Facebook. Thank you!

New reports from the Orange County are reporting that Disneyland may not open until Apr. 19th now. We have a booked visit April the 4th - 8th. If I cancel now will I still be charged $150?

Michael - Good question! For specifics on your vacation package, will you please contact a travel expert directly at 855-GET-AWAY or by sending an email to [email protected]? Thanks!

How many days before my planned trip do I have to cancel in the event of the closure being longer than March 31st?

Hailey - Thank you so much for reaching out. We understand our phone lines are very busy as we help guests; you are welcome to send an email to [email protected] to reschedule, or contact us via Facebook messenger. Hope this helps!

Mario - Si, te lo conseguiremos pronto!

Hello, We are planning on going to Disneyland the weekend of Easter 2020. We are on a Layaway Payment Plan and full amount is due next week. We did add the Peace of Mind. I am worried that if we pay the full amount we won't be able to go, due to closure in April as well. But more afraid is that we pay this amount, we will be financially struggling through a world wide crisis. What are our options? Please guide me? Thank you Michelle T.

Can u send this information in spanish.

Rob - You're welcome! Thank you so much for visiting our blog for information. Have a great day!

Anonymous - It's our pleasure! We love and appreciate our guests so much and we're doing our best to keep everyone informed.

Thanks for posting this article. It really lays out what is going to happen in March. I feel much better! Thank you!

Thank you for being a great company and for reassuring and helping us all out

AJ - Hello! Please send an email to [email protected], or send us a direct message on Facebook. Our customer service team is working as quickly s possible to help guests reschedule! If you purchased Kids Spring Savings tickets or SoCal Resident Discount tickets, they can be used any time between now and May 21, 2020. If you purchased regular Disneyland tickets, they are good for travel any time between now and December 31, 2020. Hope this helps!

been trying to contact someone aince thursday 3/12. we booked disneyland tix with max pass for mon 3/16-wed 3/18. we dis not get the peace of mind plan. please let me know what our options are. if no refund can they be transferred so someone else can use them?

Anonymous- Hello! Disneyland Resort is temporarily closed March 14 - 31, 2020. If your spring break vacation falls within that timeframe and you booked your tickets with us, please send an email to [email protected], or a direct message on one of our social media channels. Thank you!

Will Disneyland be open for spring break because I bought tickets for spring break!

Thank you for your patience as we respond to the temporary Park closures. As you can imagine, our phone circuits are overloaded as we do our best to help guests change their vacation plans. If you have not yet made contact with a travel specialist, please either send us an email: [email protected], or a private message on Facebook. Our customer service team is working as quickly as possible to help guests.

We purchased our tickets (4 adult & 1 child) for an April visit; however, our plans (my husband's conference was canceled) have changed. Will our child ticket be honored after May 21 if we need to visit after that date? If no, can we apply it to another ticket for later in the year?

We purchased tickets only for April 4-7. Since the closure of Disneyland is out of our control, and they opt to close April too, how do you feel just in charging a fee if want a refund? Seems like we should either be able to get a full refund or have the dates extend past December 31, 2020.

I have been trying for hours to get through via phone/chat/email and even facebook as mentioned above. My reservation for Disney Area starts TOMORROW. Please respond .

I have been trying to call and message but getting no answer we are supposed to check in to our trip this Sunday 3/15. How can I get ahold of someone?

What are your thoughts about Disneyland reopening on April 1st

Do you think Disneyland will be opened on April 1

We booked our flight and car rental through GAT for our Disneyland Vacation. Could you include whether these policies will include all reservations related to DL vacations or simply just DL packages and tickets. Thank you!

Your phone lines are saying invalid number any update on when those will be restored ?
