Easy Volcano Treats

Don't you just love a cute and easy recipe for kids? My children are always asking to help out in the kitchen. It is fun to be able to say, "Yes!" You can make a batch of Volcano Treats with just a few ingredients and a microwave. It is an activity that everyone in your house will lava to make.

The place that really inspired this Volcano Treat recipe was Universal's Orlando Bay water theme park. I have been looking for a fun new adventure to give my family as a surprise for Christmas this year. Volcano Bay is at the top of the list! It is full of adventure and fun for everyone. I love the festive tropical look of the water park. It has a giant volcano right in the center of things. The water slides, rivers, and swimming areas are situated at the base of the volcano. Some slides even go right into the center of it!  If you haven't checked out Volcano Bay, it is totally worth researching. I think Santa might be checking it off on our Christmas List.

Volcano Treats Recipe

Volcano Treats - Melting Marshmallows

I like to make Rice Krispy treats in the microwave. You can do it on the stovetop, but using the microwave is easier for kids! Use a large microwave safe bowl. Add 1/2 stick of butter and melt it for about 30 seconds so the butter is soft. Then, add the entire bag of marshmallows to the bowl.

Melt them for about 1 min and 30 seconds. The marshmallows will grow to be about double in size. It is fun to watch! I cooked the marshmallows longer for this recipe than I would when making normal Rice Krispy treats. The longer you cook the marshmallows the "krispier" the treats will be when you finish! Stir the melted marshmallows and mix the butter through the yummy gooey sugar!

Then, place it back in the microwave for an additional 40 seconds. The sugar in the marshmallows should be cooked enough to hold the Volcano Treats together!

Volcano Treats - Adding Cereal

Add about 6-8 cups of chocolate Rice Krispy cereal to the marshmallows. I always do this part just by eye instead of with measuring cups.

Volcano Treats Top

Watch the marshmallow to cereal ratio. Each cereal should have some of the marshmallow coating on it, but not a ton! Add cereal until the coating is thin and spread evenly over all of the flakes.

Volcano Treats - Shaping Volcanoes

I used a fluted bunting pan, like this one HERE, to make the volcano shapes. My pan is like a muffin tin, but it has six medium sized fluted cake shapes instead of regular muffin shapes. You can grab one off of Amazon if you need it! I like making little cakes in my mini fluted cake tin. They are the perfect size for kids to frost and decorate.

Spay the pan with a thin layer of cooking spray to prevent sticking. Then, place a heap of the Volcano Treat into the little cake spots. Press the mixture down so it fills the cavity and press it tight. You want it nice and firm so when you pop out the volcanoes they don't crack and break! You may need to spray your fingers with the cooking spray so they don't get crazy sticky.

Place the pan in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes to let the marshmallow coating get firm.

Volcano Treats - Decorating

Slide the top of a knife around the edges of each Volcano Treat and then gently pop each one of the the pan.

Volcano Treats Pop

Mine came out very easily. You can set them on a sheet of wax paper or transfer them immediately to the serving plates. They look very much like volcanoes right!?

Volcano Treats Hole

Unwrap the Twizzlers Pull and Peel candies. Cut of a portion off of the licorice. You want the candy to be about 1.5 inches taller than your volcano structures. Then open the top third of the candy to let the sections sprawl open like bursting lava!

Volcano Treats Lava

Slide the candy down into the hole in the volcano. You can use one or two candy lavas in each hole.

Volcano Treats Vacation

These easy Volcano Treats are perfect for any island party! I think they would be super cute with little dinosaur figurines on top! Of course, I recommend eating them in preparation for a family Vacation to Universal's Volcano Bay. That would be ideal. No matter what the occasion, this recipe is guaranteed to burst with fun.

Your instructions made these super easy! I used them for a Lord of the Rings party, with the grand finale at the volcano.
