UPDATED SEASON OF THE FORCE 2024. Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance has been open in Galaxy’s Edge at the Disneyland Resort for quite some time, but it’s still new to many! That’s why have all of the information on how to ride Rise of the Resistance at Disneyland, along with tips on booking the best Disneyland vacation yet!

How to Ride Rise of the Resistance at Disneyland

Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance is officially open to guests at the Disneyland Resort. This attraction is the second and main attraction to open inside Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge and it is a BIG deal.

It’s the most immersive, most ambitious, and quite possibly the most thrilling attraction at Disneyland Resort. But, if you want to ride it, there are a few things to know. We’re sharing everything you need to know about how you can ride Rise of the Resistance at Disneyland.

Do I have to join a Boarding Group in order to ride Rise of the Resistance?

No, Boarding Groups and Virtual Queues are no longer being used for Rise of the Resistance.

Why do I keep hearing about Virtual Queues and Boarding Groups?

When Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance first opened in 2020 at the Disneyland Resort, guests were only able to ride the attraction via a Boarding Group. However, the Disneyland Resort is no longer utilizing Boarding Groups for this attraction.

Instead, Ride of the Resistance can be accessed either by a standby line or through Disney Genie+ as an Individual Lightning Lane selection. We’ll discuss more about how to access Rise of the Resistance through an individual Lightning Lane selection with Disney Genie+ below.

What is Disney Genie+? What are Individual Lightning Lane Selections?

Disney Genie and Disney Genie+ is an optional upgrade at the Disneyland Resort. Disney Genie is a complimentary service in the Disneyland app that can provide you with customized itineraries, forecasted wait times, and more. Disney Genie+ is an add-on cost that gives you access to the Lightning Lane at select attractions, free PhotoPass Downloads and more.

Essentially, a Lightning Lane gives you quicker access to some of your favorite attractions, much like FastPass and MaxPass did. However, at both Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure, there are select attractions where Disney Genie+ doesn’t apply.

These attractions are called Individual Lightning Lane selections. Typically, these are the most popular attractions at each park. Since these attractions typically have the longest lines, there is an additional cost if you want to join the Lightning Lane line.

Price for Individual Lightning Lane purchases is per person and can change at any time, even daily during your trip. Individual Lightning Lane selections can be purchased for up to two different attractions each day.

For more detailed information about Disney Genie and Disney Genie+, check out our blog article here.

Individual Lightning Lane Selection and Standby Line for Rise of the Resistance

Because of the introduction of Disney Genie+, there are two ways to ride Rise of the Resistance at Disneyland. The first option is to wait in the standby line. We recommend joining the standby queue if you ever see the wait time listed as less than 60 minutes for the best experience.

The second option is to purchase the Individual Lightning Lane selection for this attraction. Although it’s an additional cost, it will save you time to be able to do other things throughout the Resort.

No matter what you choose to do, there’s no wrong answer. The most important thing is that you’re going to ride one of the most incredible, jaw-dropping attractions ever created!

Other Tips for Riding Rise of the Resistance at Disneyland

Here are a few tips to enhance your vacation experience at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge when riding Rise of the Resistance:

  • Get a multi-day Disneyland ticket. The more park days you have, the more opportunities you'll have to ride Rise of the Resistance. Our top recommendation is our Extra Day Free ticket which gives you five days for the price of a 4-day ticket!
  • Get a Park Hopper Disneyland Ticket. For those who want to ride Rise of the Resistance multiple times, a Park Hopper ticket gives you the most flexibility during your vacation. Although you’re only able to purchase an individual Lightning Lane selection once per day, you can always wait in the standby line if you’d like to ride it again. With a Park Hopper ticket, you can go back and forth between Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park as many times as you’d like. Be sure to check the Disneyland App for current Park Hopper time frames.
  • If you’re not planning on purchasing an Individual Lightning Lane selection for Rise of the Resistance, we recommend getting there early. Give yourself enough time to get through security and the main gates. This way, you can head straight for Rise of the Resistance via Fantasyland as soon as the park opens to avoid long lines
  • Have a positive attitude. Remember that nothing is guaranteed. Rides can go down, entertainment can be canceled because of weather, AND you can STILL have a great time. Your Disneyland vacation truly is what you make it, and we hope you make it the best ever!

Leilani - You're welcome; thanks for checking out our tips for riding Rise of the Resistance. We're glad to hear you had success with both the app and the paper options.

Interesting to learn about the Guest services tip. Thanks! Didn’t know that was an option. Unless that’s the same as the paper ticket option at the kiosks? I noticed that wasn’t mentioned. We tried 2 different days— got a group thru the app the first day thankfully. Then ok day 2 the app didn’t work for me but I had my husband try the paper ticket booth and got them there at the same rime I tried the app. Thankfully we had the backup paper ticket option! (Those are located across from a hungry Bear restaurant and another in Tomorrowland)

Teresa - Good question! Rider Switch/Child Swap works the same for Rise of the Resistance as it does for other rides. Up to three people can stay behind after a Cast Member scans their tickets. They'll then be able to experience ROTR when the rest of the party is done. Just be sure EVERYONE is in the Boarding Group so they're eligible to ride.

Do you know how they do child swap for this ride? We will be there in a week, so wish me luck on getting to ride it ??

Anonymous- Last year Disney released Oogie Boogie Bash dates in April. We'll be sure to let you know when we have them. Stay up to date with our social media channels and we'll keep you informed!

Does anyone know the dates for the Oogie Boogie Bash for fall in Calif. Adventure???

Mike- Thanks for sharing your experience. We're sorry to hear you were unable to get a Boarding Group to experience Rise of the Resistance this vacation.

Very poor system, you have to be first in the line at the gate every day to have a chance, if you are not through the gate with the whole party in the first minute, you will not get to ride, same thing every day. No ride here over all 5 days of pass. They should at least only allow one ride per multi day pass to give everyone a better chance to ride, not just the people who have no kids to get out the door at 5am and wait 2+ hours in line at the front gate every day.

Anonymous- We're sorry to hear about your experience!

I just went with my family yesterday and we were not quick enough to get a boarding group even though we were in the park at opening. The park was quite empty so this makes me think this attraction is not ready for primetime (it broke down twice during the day I was told by a cast member) even though Disney is advertising the heck out of it. Appears Disney did not learn their lesson from their missteps with their opening of Galaxy's Edge. We feel taken advantage of by the false advertising. We will not be returning anytime soon.

Anonymous- We're so sorry to hear you didn't get a Boarding Group during your vacation!

This has to b the most unfair thing I’ve ever seen. My family and traveled from Northern California and only had two days at the park. What a waste! We couldn’t do the ride.

It’s sad because we only come to the park every few years and probably won’t b back for a few more years as our income won’t allow it.

This is a very poor system.

Marina- We love this tip! Thanks so much for sharing your experience. We're happy to hear that it all worked out for you and everyone got to experience the ride.

Another tip we learned the hard way (we got to ride it on the 21st!) Is when you are trying to book the boarding group, only have one member from tour party book from their app, we had 2 people.on the app and one person in line for paper tickets and our boarding groups were all split up. Each member of our party who tried to get tickets got some, but we were all separated even though our group was linked together in each of our apps. We still got to ride and it was FANTASTIC!!! but next time I'll just do it from one app. Also, boarding groups are selling out withing one minute of the park opening....so be prepared.
