Disney Copycat Peppermint Churros Recipe
Some people go to Disneyland and Walt Disney World to experience the excitement of riding attractions like Indiana Jones, Guardians of the Galaxy Mission Breakout, Thunder Mountain Railroad and Space Mountain. Others visit the magical parks to see their favorite Disney characters! Pictures with Mickey Mouse, Kylo Ren, Queen Elsa, and Lightning McQueen are pretty special. There are park guests that travel to view the world class entertainment...parades, fireworks, musicals, and more!
And the rest of us, we go for the food!
Disney has mastered the art of making food worth traveling for! Have you ever craved a Disney churro, Dole Whip, corn dog, turkey leg, Mint Julep, or a Mickey caramel apple? Can you close your eyes and picture the smell of hot New Orleans Square beignets tossed in cinnamon and sugar? Even the popcorn at the Disney Parks is bursting with just a little something special.
Right now, display windows at Disneyland are lined with seasonal twists on all of the classic theme park foods! Hot Chocolate Beignets, hand-pulled candy canes, Gingerbread Funnel Cake, Navidad Punch, Pumpkin Spice Lattes, and Mickey Turkey Pie! There is no place like Disneyland for the Holidays. It's the tastiest place on Earth.
Because churros are one of the most popular items at the parks, I thought it would be fun to create a Disney holiday treat recipe to make at home! There are so many great churros on the menu, but the Chocolate Peppermint Churros looked too good to pass up. It is delicious.
There are a few ways to approach this cooking adventure. The first option is to follow the homemade churro recipe and tutorial here (omit the strawberry flavoring). Make hot fresh basic cinnamon and sugar churros from scratch! They are melt in your mouth delicious. But, like all good things, you have to put in some effort. Hence, option two! Buy churros from the store and decorate them. I decided on option two.
You can buy churros from any Costco store. Or, they are also sold in the freezer section of the grocery store. Just pop them in the oven to bake! Pretty easy.
Feel free to gather your kids together to help make the Disney Peppermint Churros. It is a great activity for the whole family.
Disney Peppermint Churros Supplies:
Prepare the churros, whether homemade or store-bought. Lay them out on a baking sheet that has been lined with wax paper.
Disney Peppermint Churros Toppings
Then, prepare the toppings. Unwrap 3 to 4 candy canes and place them in a Ziplock bag. Seal the bag. Use a rolling pin to break the candy into small pieces. Just bang and pound until the candy shatters. It's quite fun! Pour the peppermint bits into a dish.
Next melt the chocolate. You need both white and milk. I always buy quality chocolate for my baking projects. It is leaps and bounds better than the cheap waxy chocolate. Trust me. Spend the extra couple of dollars for a name brand like Ghirardelli. You will never regret it.
Place the chocolate into small microwave safe dishes and warm them in the microwave for about one minute. When you pull the chocolate from the microwave there should still be small chunks of chocolate in the bowl. Stir it and the chucks will melt.
Drizzle the milk chocolate over 3/4 of each churro. I use a spoon and let the chocolate drip off the end of the spoon onto the churro. Move the spoon back and forth to spread the chocolate in thin zig-zag stripes.
Then, repeat the process with the white chocolate.
While the chocolate is still soft, sprinkle the crushed peppermint on top of the churros. Don't go overboard with the candy. Peppermint is a pretty strong flavor. A thin coat is perfect.
It just takes a few minutes for the chocolate to set up on the churros. Don't wait too long to enjoy the treat. They are at their best when the churro is soft and warm. If you have to wait to serve Peppermint Churros for a few hours after making them, you can warm each one in the microwave for about 13 seconds just prior to consuming.
There are so many magical and tasty desserts and snacks being offered at the Disney Parks for the Holiday Season! Make sure to try them all. OK. Maybe not ALL of them. But, the Peppermint Churros for sure. Happy Holidays!
